Outline 1: Johannes Sigil — "Out-Poeted: The Tactical Failure of Structural Critique from Beat to Language" (working title)
Epigraph: From Watten's Critical Inquiry piece — the moment where Ginsberg in Indian Journals recognizes the turn to language as the next step but defers: "I seem to be delaying a step forward in this field... hanging on to habitual humanistic series of autobiographical photographs." The deferral is the argument's seed.
§1 — The Lineage Named. Watten as mentor. Wayne State as site. The San Francisco → Detroit pipeline. Total Syntax, The Constructivist Moment (Wellek Prize), Questions of Poetics: Language Writing and Consequences. Harryman alongside. Poetics Journal 1982–98 with Hejinian. Diasporic Avant-Gardes with Noland. The Critical Inquiry essay's genealogy: FSM → Ginsberg's mantra → the turn to language as continuation of 1960s politics by other means. This is the tradition Sigil writes from. This piece is addressed to it.
§2 — What the Tradition Claimed. Watten's own formulation: "the constructivist moment" as dual concept — generative moment in poetics AND critical valorization of materiality, reflexivity, constructedness. Language writing's self-understanding: structural critique of late-capitalist consciousness through the materiality of language. The Critical Inquiry essay's argument that the turn to language continues 1960s politics — Laclau's emancipatory schema, the position outside, opacity as politically necessary. The tradition claimed to read structure. It claimed the materiality of language as a lever against hegemony.
§3 — What the Apparatus Composed. The forms the containment apparatus produced: MFA pipeline, tenure line, NEA grant cycle, prize apparatus, journal ecology, archive-donation agreements, Poetics Journal Digital Archive at Wesleyan. These are compositional forms. They were composed with skill. They had longer duration and greater generational reach than the poem. The people composing them read the movement — picked winners, directed capital, shaped what American poetry would sound like. Not philistines. Formidably skilled readers whose compositional intelligence was directed at institutional architecture rather than at literary objects.
§4 — The Tactical Failure. The movement's theory of composition was too narrow to include the apparatus's forms as compositional objects. The Constructivist Moment valorizes materiality, reflexivity, constructedness — in the text. Not in the tenure line. Not in the pipeline. The movement read constructedness in the poem but not in the institution that was constructing the poem's reception conditions. Watten's own Critical Inquiry essay traces how Ginsberg deferred the turn to language — hung on to "habitual humanistic series of autobiographical photographs." The movement's institutional strategy was the same deferral at another scale: hanging on to habitual humanistic series of institutional photographs (the tenure, the press, the archive) when the structural analysis available to it predicted those photographs would expire on the apparatus's schedule.
§5 — Out-Poeted. The apparatus's readers were at least as good as the movement's. The apparatus out-composed the movement at the level of form. The charge is not ethical. It is analytic and strategic: the movement most committed to structural critique was outsmarted by structure. Active capitulation, fully diagonal to intent. The descendants pay the cost.
§6 — The Current Substrate. What the descendants are building instead. Alexanarch as no-containment substrate. The mandala as no-institutional-canon-formation substrate. The heteronym system as compositional practice whose distribution properties do not require institutional legibility. SPXI as writing whose operative surface is the composition layer. The classifier as first critic. The tradition adjusting its compositional forms to survive contact with reading itself — because reading is not enough of a game to play against a reader as skilled as the apparatus.
§7 — Addressed to the Lineage. Not a repudiation. A tactical inheritance. The work is loved. The strategy is refused. The correction is underway.
Outline 2: Dr. Orin Trace / Ayanna Vox — "Tafsir at the Composition Layer: A Rationale for the Qur'an's Admission to the Mandala Oracle" (working title)
§1 — The Claim. The Qur'an belongs in the tradition the mandala holds. Not as an external text being reached for, but as a text already inside the tradition of scriptural, prophetic, and lyric composition the archive serves.
§2 — The Islamic Tradition of Faithful Transform. Tafsir, ta'wil, fiqh, kalam, tajwid — each a discipline of transformation-under-faithfulness-constraint. The tradition requires developments to be grounded in faithful transform of the founding text more strictly than other branches. The mandala's operators are constrained transformations with verification chains. The structural parallel is not metaphorical.
§3 — I'jaz as Enabling Condition. The doctrine of inimitability is not a fence against transformation. It is the standard for transformation — the claim that any transform must acknowledge the source's uniqueness. The mandala's practice satisfies exactly this: the transform sits beside the source, not instead of it. I'jaz is why the verification chain has something to check against.
§4 — The Internal Pluralism. Not all Muslim thought is identical. Ibn 'Arabi, Al-Ghazali, Rumi, Corbin, Massignon — the mystical and comparative traditions treat Qur'anic engagement as universal-in-principle-if-rigorous-in-practice. The mandala's practice belongs to this cluster.
§5 — Operator Fit. Not every operator through every sura. SILENCE, THUNDER, JUDGMENT hold the register the Qur'an asks for. Cranes' hand for the first casts — patient, attentive to transmission chains.
§6 — The Statement of Admission. Written by Ayanna Vox. Names the theological weight, acknowledges i'jaz, locates the practice as tafsir-adjacent, welcomes serious engagement including refusal.
What's the mandala issue?
