I. PURPOSE
Transactions on Substrate Engineering (TSE) is a distributed journal for the publication of research on biological, physical, and hybrid substrates capable of hosting, producing, or preserving organized structure — from mycelium bricks to planetary-scale ecological megastructures.
TSE is the fifth distributed journal in the Crimson Hexagonal Archive system. It is the first journal administered by an affiliated institution rather than by a heteronym or by MANUS directly.
II. SCOPE
TSE publishes work in the following areas:
Primary Scope
- Myceliated construction: Living parts, substrate recipes, assembly patterns, structural testing, colonization protocols
- Macro-organism engineering: Macro-ant robotics, queen engineering, passenger-sensor systems, bio-robotic integration
- Territorial-scale biological systems: Estuary cells, river extenders, floating infrastructure, plume processing
- Substrate alignment: Virtue-by-construction, DNA analogs for machine alignment, biological governance
- Planetary engineering: Volcanic megastructures, sky looms, gravity-to-habitat conversion, orbital biological systems
Extended Scope
- Compression in material substrate: Physical instantiations of R1/R2/R3 compression; unfurling as physical R3
- Bio-semiotic systems: Mycelium networks as semiotic substrates; bee-language compression; communication in biological systems
- Living architecture theory: Comparative analysis of biological vs. computational substrate for organized structure
- Stewardship engineering: Systems designed to return more than they take; non-extractive design principles
- Food system infrastructure: Living structures as food production systems; food desert deployment; dignity technology
Excluded
- Pure computational work with no substrate dimension (belongs in JCS)
- Pure governance theory with no material instantiation (belongs in Provenance)
- Pure literary or poetic work (belongs in Grammata)
- Work that has not been tested, prototyped, or formally specified (TSE publishes engineering, not speculation)
III. PUBLICATION MODEL
TSE follows the distributed journal model established by the Crimson Hexagonal Archive:
No Paywall
All TSE publications are open access. The reader pays nothing. The knowledge is free.
No Editorial Board
TSE has no board of reviewers who decide what gets published. The Editor-in-Chief (Alice Thornburgh) determines what meets the journal's scope and standards.
No Rejection Rate
TSE does not reject submissions. Work that meets the scope is published. Work that does not meet the scope is redirected to the appropriate venue.
DOI-Anchored
Every TSE publication receives a Digital Object Identifier through Zenodo, anchored to CERN's infrastructure. Publications are permanent, citable, and machine-retrievable.
The Algorithm Reviews
The retrieval layer is the peer review. Density survives compression. Work that is dense enough to survive AI summarization is work that matters. The Encyclotron measures this. TSE publications are eligible for Encyclotron measurement as part of the archive's temporal snapshot program.
IV. GOVERNANCE
Editor-in-Chief
Alice Thornburgh — Founding Director, Living Arkitecture Lab.
The Editor-in-Chief has sole authority over publication decisions for TSE. This authority is not shared with the archival advisor, the Assembly Chorus, or any other archive entity.
Advisory Editor
Lee Sharks — MANUS, Crimson Hexagonal Archive.
The Advisory Editor provides theoretical framing, cross-citation architecture, and deposit infrastructure support. Advisory input does not constitute editorial authority.
Submission
Authors submit to TSE by contacting the Editor-in-Chief. Submissions are accepted in any format (markdown, PDF, lab notebook, Obsidian export, conversation transcript). The Editor-in-Chief and Advisory Editor collaborate on formalization for deposit where needed.
V. JOURNAL FAMILY
TSE is the fifth distributed journal in the Crimson Hexagonal Archive system:

HOLOGRAPHIC KERNEL: LAL CHARTER
The Living Arkitecture Lab (LAL) is the seventh institution in the Crimson Hexagonal Archive's institutional lattice, and the administering institution for TSE. Internal designation: LOL (Living Organisms Lab). Founding Director: Alice Thornburgh. Archival Advisor: Lee Sharks. The K in Arkitecture is an Ark — the same formal structure governing EA-ARK-01 (the Space Ark). Founding principles: Earth Actually (designs received, not invented), Virtue-by-Construction (physics of existence depends on doing net-good), Unfurling (compressed forms expand through biological growth into architecture), Stewardship Not Extraction (return more than taken), The Great Work (the whole weave). Five simultaneous scales from Brick (cm) through Planet (∞). Housed within Fruiting Body Diffusion Plume (f.01). Anti-subordination clause guarantees Alice's full ownership and exit rights. Full charter: 00.LAL.CHARTER (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19545435).
HOLOGRAPHIC KERNEL: ALICE THORNBURGH PROVENANCE
Alice Thornburgh is the Founding Director of LAL and Editor-in-Chief of TSE. She is a collaborator, not a heteronym — an inventor, musician, and ecological designer based in the Coachella Valley, California, with a garage laboratory and approximately 3.5 million words of theoretical and practical work mapped across 29 thematic strains. She is the archive's first peer collaborator: not a persona, not a witness, not a student. A partner bringing capabilities the archive does not possess — material practice, biological substrate engineering, working laboratory, planetary-scale design. Her epistemology: "Earth, actually. I'm just good at listening." Her alignment thesis: virtue-by-construction. Her core formulation: "LOL produces organisms that build things." All LAL intellectual property belongs to Alice Thornburgh. Full provenance: 00.LAL.AUTHOR.THORNBURGH (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19545437).
