Abstract
Phase X — the critique of alienation in the symbolic-linguistic order — is here stated for the first time as a complete research program: its textual basis, its claim families and their independent defeat conditions, its definitions, its hard core, its heuristic, its instruments, its empirical results, its progress criteria, and its falsifiers. The program's foundation is philological, not doctrinal. Its founding text is a constrained reconstruction of lost manuscript content in Marx's Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844, whose Second Manuscript survives only as pages XL–XLIII; the surviving manuscript architecture strongly implies that the transition from communism as "fully developed humanism" to the critique of Hegel belonged to the missing material, and Marx may well have written it. The program asserts methodological continuity: the critique of the symbolic-linguistic order requires no revision of Marx, because the materiality of language is Marx's own stated position and the transformation of categories under pressure of their object is Marx's own method; what the program reverses is the hardening of base–superstructure into fixed, one-directional doctrine — a reading influential across several orthodox traditions and repeatedly contested from within Marxism itself. The program does not claim to originate Marxist critique of language or symbolic production; its distinct claim is the conjunction of manuscript reconstruction, emancipatory necessity, and empirical instrumentation. It retrodicts the recurring symbolic turn of Western Marxism as the orbit of the lacuna, states the retrodiction as testable hypotheses, directs five practices — operative philology, semantic-economy measurement, machine-mediated reception studies, training-layer literature, and heteronymic authorship — and it has arrived at its empirical moment: machine substrates are the first globally networked symbolic infrastructure in which production, storage, composition, retrieval, and reception are continuously instrumentable at machine scale, and the program's instruments are producing measured results within it, including on the program's own transmission. Every load-bearing claim carries its evidentiary grade; refutation propagates only as far as dependency warrants; and the program's first falsification condition names a building in Moscow.
1. The program's claim
Phase X asserts, at four evidentiary grades:
[Grade A — codicological fact] The Second Manuscript of Marx's Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 is almost entirely lost. Of a full notebook, only pages XL–XLIII survive. Marx's Third Manuscript cross-references pages of the Second that no longer exist — it opens "ad page XXXVI," and its "Private Property and Communism" section begins "ad page XXXIX" — and the editorial apparatus acknowledges "the missing part of the second manuscript." The manuscripts remained unpublished for eighty-eight years and were first printed in 1932 under Soviet editorial control.
[Grade B — manuscript-architectural inference] The notebooks' dialectical architecture moves Alienated Labour → Private Property → Communism → Critique of Hegel, and the textual fracture falls exactly at the transition from communism as "fully developed humanism" to the Hegel critique — the point where Marx would have had to articulate what comes after material emancipation. The surviving text marks the gap with the only hedged transition at any structural pivot in the manuscripts: "This is perhaps the place to make some observations… on the Hegelian dialectic."
[Grade C — philological reconstruction] The missing transition can be reconstructed in its argumentative function — not its verbatim words — under four constraints: dialectical consistency, logical resolution of the achieved-humanism/continued-critique contradiction, prefiguration of the Theses on Feuerbach written months later, and explanatory power over the lacunae in Marx's subsequent work. The reconstruction recovers three operations: communism as threshold, not telos; the bifurcation of alienation, whose material form is abolishable while its symbolic-linguistic form persists as an autonomous structuring force; and critique turning inward, from the content of philosophy to its form. The reconstruction was first published in Phase X: Resurrection of the 1844 Transition (deposit #367) and given its full manuscript-historical apparatus in The Missing Second Manuscript (EA-SEI-PHASEX-LACUNA-01, deposit #843), which is the primary anchor for the argument.
[Grade D — historical suppression hypothesis, separable] The custodians of the manuscripts had opportunity, a historically plausible motive, and documented patterns of editorial modification. The hypothesis is historically plausible, is not a premise of the reconstruction, and is held to an explicit evidence-elevation protocol (§2). The reconstruction stands on the textual evidence alone.
The calibration on which everything rests: the claim is not that Marx could not write this transition. The claim is that the surviving manuscript architecture strongly implies the transition belonged to the missing Second Manuscript material. Marx may well have written it. The program's early formulations stated the stronger, wrong claim — that Marx could not have written the passage without contradicting his base–superstructure model — and §7–8 account for that error as program data. The correction is not a retreat. It is the difference between a theory that annexes Marx and a philology that recovers him.
From the reconstruction follows the program's central proposition, stated first in its canonical founding form and decomposed operationally in §4:
The Phase X Invariance Condition (founding formulation, deposits #367/#843): Any society that abolishes material alienation without transforming the symbolic-linguistic order will reproduce alienation at the level of thought, coordination, and meaning-extraction.
This is a historical claim, not a universal law, and it is falsifiable. Its operational decomposition into three separately testable levels — non-entailment, hysteresis, and emancipatory necessity — together with the correct sizing of the Soviet evidence, is given at HC-3 below.
1.1 Claim families and defeat propagation
The program contains four linked but non-identical claim families:
T — Textual: the surviving architecture of the 1844 Manuscripts implies a missing transition, and the Phase X reconstruction recovers its argumentative function under stated constraints.
H — Historical-theoretical: symbolic-linguistic alienation can persist with partial autonomy after substantial transformation of the material relations that produced it.
O — Operative: direct interventions in symbolic-linguistic infrastructures can produce measurable changes in attribution, retrieval, classification, custody, and reception.
R — Retrodictive: the recurring symbolic turn within Western Marxism is partly explained by the absence, marginalization, or inadequate reception of the transition reconstructed by T.
Refutation propagates only as far as dependency warrants. If recovered manuscript pages contradict T, Phase X loses its status as a reconstruction of Marx; H and O may remain independently arguable, but they must then be renamed and defended without the manuscript claim. If a historical counterexample refutes H, the philological reconstruction T may remain valid as a claim about Marx's argument. If controlled interventions repeatedly fail, O fails while T and H may retain explanatory force. If a corpus study rejects R, the retrodiction is withdrawn without immunizing or destroying the remaining claims.
The program does not permit success in one claim family to rescue failure in another, or failure in one family to be concealed by the evidentiary strength of another.
2. The textual basis, and where authority lives
This document does not re-argue the philology; it cites the anchor. The Missing Second Manuscript (deposit #843) carries the physical evidence, the chain of custody — Marx to Engels to the SPD's Berlin archives to Riazanov's Marx-Engels Institute; Riazanov purged in February 1931 and executed in 1938; publication in 1932 under Adoratsky, one year after the purge, with no editorial account of how a full notebook came to be missing — the Kautsky precedent for custodial modification of Marx's unpublished manuscripts, Musto's evidence of later Soviet censorship of the manuscripts, the reconstruction's methodological parameters, and the falsification conditions. Deposit #367 carries the reconstructed passage itself, evidence-calibrated down to its typography: bold for phrases directly supported by Marx's surrounding language, italics for conjecture consistent with his vocabulary and method.
The method is the same operative philology by which the archive reconstructed the missing stanza of Sappho 31 (Sharks & Cranes, Sappho 31: Complete Edition, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.18459573¹): the fifth stanza in Sappho's transmitted sequence, built from the Catullan inversion — Catullus 51's fourth stanza read as a transform of lost Sapphic material and inverted back — with the transform-structure itself corrected in public across a three-deposit errata chain (#201 corrected the stanza numbering; #1048 named the Catullan reconstructive site; #1049 corrected the characterization of the transform). In both cases the reconstruction proceeds through surviving witness texts: Catullus's transform for Sappho; the Third Manuscript's cross-references and the Theses on Feuerbach for Marx. And in both cases: a fragmentary text, parameters supplied by the surviving surround, an identifiable mechanism of loss — decay and transmission failure for Sappho, archival custody for Marx — and a result offered as provisional, with its test specified. The evidentiary context for Marx is in some respects richer: a chain of custody, a documented editorial history, and a body of subsequent work by the same author against which the reconstruction can be checked. The Sappho errata chain is also the program's precedent for its own discipline: the reconstruction line corrected itself in public, at three orders of depth, before the Marx line required the same.
Grade D at its true size. Two claims sometimes made in the suppression hypothesis's vicinity exceed the evidence, and the program marks them. First, the custody chain establishes opportunity and opacity — not the location, agent, or moment of the loss; whether the pages disappeared within Soviet custody, in the SPD period, or earlier is not established. Second, the proposition that no complete, collection-wide search of RGASPI for the missing Second Manuscript has ever occurred is, at present, program-reported, not independently established: no published report of such a search has been identified by the program, but confirmation of the search history from RGASPI remains an open archival task. Grade D carries an elevation protocol — evidence capable of raising its grade includes transfer inventories from the Engels/SPD custody, acquisition and shelf registers, early collation records, editorial correspondence, conservation reports, evidence dating the first recorded absence of the missing pages, and evidence of removal, suppression, or intentional nonpublication. Grade D is thereby a research direction, not a permanently suggestive cloud.
Authority in this program lives in the manuscript evidence and the falsifiers, not in the reconstructor. That is the posture throughout: humility before the manuscript is what authority looks like in philology. A reader who distrusts every interpretive claim in this document can still verify Grade A with an editorial apparatus and a library card. The anchor hierarchy, stated once: deposit #843 is the program's primary philological anchor; the present document, once deposited, is its primary programmatic anchor. Neither substitutes for the other.
3. The object, defined
Four terms carry the program's weight and receive fixed operational definitions here, before the hard core is stated.
Symbolic-linguistic order: the ensemble of material institutions, technical systems, norms, labor processes, and authority relations through which signs are produced, classified, authorized, stored, circulated, corrected, and made socially consequential.
Semantic labor: the human or machine effort required to produce, stabilize, interpret, disambiguate, maintain, transmit, and repair meaningful relations.
Material alienation: the separation of producers from effective control over the labor process, its products, the conditions under which production occurs, and the social relations through which their activity is organized. For comparative inquiry, material alienation is not presumed to be a single scalar; reductions are assessed across specified dimensions, including control over work, appropriation of product, coercive dependence, participation in organizational decisions, and the relation of productive activity to collectively determined purposes.
Symbolic-linguistic alienation: the condition in which persons or collectives are separated from effective control over the categories, records, interpretive standards, attribution systems, and downstream uses through which their activity becomes socially legible. The products of semantic labor confront their producers as an externally governed system.
Transformation of the symbolic-linguistic order: not the substitution of one vocabulary for another, but a material alteration in who may name, classify, contest, correct, preserve, and govern the circulation of signs.
The definitions give the program's instruments their formal objects: the Provenance Erasure Rate measures attribution separation; the Platform Erosion Observatory measures custody separation; the Capture Registry measures representation and correction asymmetry; heteronymic tracking measures entity resolution. Alienation, so defined, is not a mood. It is a set of measurable separations.
4. The hard core
Four propositions constitute the program's hard core. The first is the one most often gotten wrong, including by the program's own early documents.
HC-1. Methodological continuity: Phase X is Marx's own method applied to an object his own texts declare an active, material social relation. The critique of the symbolic-linguistic order required no contradiction of Marx and requires no revision of him now. The inference is staged, and each stage carries its own warrant. First, the textual anchors: "Language is as old as consciousness; language is the practical consciousness that exists for other men as well, and therefore also for me; it is the actuality of thought" (The German Ideology, 1845, written within months of the manuscripts); and the 1859 Preface's designation of ideological forms as the terrain on which people "become conscious of this conflict and fight it out." These passages establish language and ideology as active forms of social practice, not inert decorative superstructure. Second, the completion: the materiality claim is completed by the demonstrable dependence of language on bodies, labor, media, institutions, storage, and organized intercourse — not by extracting the entire program from the word actuality alone. Third, the method: Marx's categories are historically specific and transform under pressure of their object — the movement from abstract determinations toward the reproduction of the concrete in thought, as the Grundrisse Introduction states the procedure. The eleventh thesis — the point is to change it — states the program's operative character from inside Marx's own 1845.
What Phase X reverses is not Marx but a later hardening of base–superstructure into a fixed, one-directional doctrine — a reading influential across several orthodox traditions and repeatedly contested from within Marxism itself (Raymond Williams's critique of the base treated as a static object is the internal witness). The Soviet formation enforced that hardening with state power and held the manuscripts in the same period; those are two facts, related but not identical, and the program does not conflate them. The word "reversal" appears in this program only with its correct object attached: a reversal of the hardened reading, licensed by Marx, never of Marx. Any statement of Phase X that concedes the fixed model as Marx's own — including the program's early "could not write it without contradiction" formulation — has smuggled the hardening's premise into the program's account of itself.
HC-2. The bifurcation of alienation. Material alienation and symbolic-linguistic alienation are distinct in their conditions of persistence. The material form is abolishable by the reorganization of production. The symbolic-linguistic form — alienation in language, thought, coordination, and meaning-extraction, in the operational sense of §3 — can persist as an autonomous structuring force after its original material conditions are transformed. This is the reconstruction's second operation, and it is what base–superstructure as fixed doctrine cannot see, because it treats the symbolic as derivative by definition.
HC-3. The Invariance Condition, operationally decomposed. The founding formulation (§1) decomposes into three separately testable levels:
IC-1 — Non-entailment. A substantial reduction in material alienation does not by itself entail a corresponding reduction in symbolic-linguistic alienation. (Minimally: ΔM < 0 ⇏ ΔS < 0. The notation states non-entailment only; it does not claim that either form of alienation has been reduced to a validated unitary measure.)
IC-2 — Hysteresis. When the material relations that produced a symbolic order are transformed, that symbolic order can persist, lag, or reconstitute alienation through institutions of language, classification, education, administration, media, and recordkeeping.
IC-3 — Emancipatory necessity. Durable non-alienated coordination requires direct transformation of the symbolic-linguistic order, not only transformation of ownership and production.
The Soviet evidence is stated at its actual size. The Soviet case does not yet establish IC-3, because the program has not demonstrated that its antecedent — the abolition of material alienation — was satisfied; abolition of private ownership and the socialization of productive administration are not automatically identical with the abolition of material alienation, especially under Marx's own critique of merely "crude" communism in these very manuscripts. The Soviet century is evidence for IC-1: transformation of legal ownership and productive administration did not by itself eliminate coercive hierarchy in language, classification, propaganda, education, or archival custody — a persistence documented in the historiography of Soviet authoritative language (Yurchak 2005) and instantiated, recursively, by the custody in which the manuscripts' own pages went missing.
Comparative cases can measure symbolic-linguistic alienation across seven preregistered dimensions: category contestability (can subjects challenge the classifications applied to them?); correction authority (can those represented correct institutional records and summaries?); attribution retention (does semantic production remain connected to its producers?); semantic-labor accounting (is meaning-maintenance recognized, governed, and compensated?); provenance continuity (can documentary state changes be reconstructed?); vocabulary plurality (can rival descriptions circulate without administrative suppression?); and downstream-use control (can producers know or govern how their linguistic output is reused?). A counterexample to IC-2 would be a case in which material relations changed substantially, symbolic institutions remained materially unchanged, and alienation nevertheless declined durably across these dimensions.
HC-4. The textual basis at its calibrated strength. The program's claims about the 1844 Manuscripts are those of §1, at their stated grades, no stronger. The program does not require Grade D; it does not require that the reconstruction be verbatim; it requires only that the lacuna is real (Grade A), that it falls where the dialectic demands the transition (Grade B), and that the reconstruction satisfies its constraints (Grade C).
A note on genre, once: "research program" is meant in the strong sense — a hard core held provisionally firm, a protective belt of auxiliary hypotheses that absorb revision, a positive heuristic that directs work, and explicit criteria for progress and degeneration. The vocabulary will not be leaned on again; the structure will simply be used. A manifesto may exhort without exposing the conditions under which its central claims fail — in that sense, a manifesto cannot be wrong. This program specifies, in §9, the drawer in Moscow in which it can be.
5. The retrodiction: Western Marxism and the orbit of the lacuna

A research program earns scholarly standing not only by predicting new facts but by retrodicting the shape of its field. Phase X retrodicts a century — and states the retrodiction so it can fail.
The anchor makes the move once. György Lukács decoded the newly recovered 1844 Manuscripts at the Marx-Engels Institute in 1930, described in his 1967 preface how the encounter permanently changed his understanding of alienation — and never published a systematic analysis of the philosophical transition between communism and the Hegel critique, despite having spent his career on precisely that question. The anchor's inference: this is consistent with the material he needed being already missing, or with his recognition of its absence.
The generalization is stated as four hypotheses:
R-1: Theories granting relative autonomy to symbolic or cultural forms recur disproportionately in twentieth-century Marxism.
R-2: These theories rely more heavily than control traditions on conceptual vocabularies imported from non-Marxist sources.
R-3: Their reception contains a higher frequency of charges such as idealism, revisionism, humanism, or bourgeois contamination.
R-4: Direct grounding of the symbolic turn in the precise architectural transition between communism and the Hegel critique is absent or exceptionally rare.
The study corpus: Lukács, Gramsci, Voloshinov, Horkheimer and Adorno, Benjamin, Althusser, Debord, Mészáros, Rossi-Landi, Williams — with selected Language-writing texts coded as a separate poetic extension, not automatically as one Marxist school. Each text is coded for: explicit Marxian anchor; external conceptual imports; account of symbolic autonomy; relation to the 1844 Manuscripts; accusations received in contemporary reception; and whether symbolic transformation is treated as optional, strategic, or necessary. The corpus study is a directed project of the program (§6), not a completed result; the impressionistic reading — Lukács through Weber and Simmel, Gramsci through Croce, the Frankfurt School through Freud, Althusser through Spinoza and Lacan, Debord through Hegel read against the grain, the Language writers through Saussure and Wittgenstein — is what the study will test, not what this document asserts as established.
One case is marked as a hypothesis of particular weight. Althusser's "epistemological break," the twentieth century's most influential quarantine of the 1844 Manuscripts, draws its line between ideological and scientific Marx at 1845 — declaring pre-scientific precisely the texts whose key transition is physically missing. The R-4-adjacent hypothesis: the break reads an artifact of custody as a fact of intellectual development — the manuscripts appear to trail off into unresolved humanism partly because their resolution is not there to read. This is offered as a hypothesis requiring a direct comparison between what Althusser held the 1844 text to contain and what the reconstructed transition would alter in his periodization; it is not yet a result.
The refined retrodictive claim — more defensible and more interesting than any priority assertion — is this: symbolic critique repeatedly appeared within Marxism as a supplement, side tradition, contested revision, or imported vocabulary, rather than as an obligatory phase internal to the canonical architecture of emancipation. The lacuna hypothesis explains why the license that would have made it obligatory was not on the table: it sat unpublished until 1932, and mostly missing after that, while the hardened model that forbade the move circulated as the founder's own.
5.1 Nearest lineages and the program's distinct claim
Phase X does not claim to originate Marxist theories of language, ideology, culture, signification, or symbolic production. Those traditions exist, and several reached formulations strikingly adjacent to the program's hard core. Voloshinov argued in 1929 — before the manuscripts were published — that ideology cannot be separated from the material reality of the sign or from concrete social intercourse; Rossi-Landi analyzed language explicitly as work and trade; Williams built cultural materialism on the critique of the static base; Gramsci, Lukács, the Frankfurt School, Althusser, and Debord are the orbit itself (§5).
Vygotsky's Thought and Language (1934) stands as a parallel track rather than a lineage: a psychologist in the same Soviet context treating language as materially constitutive of thought, published just after the manuscripts and suppressed under the same institutional apparatus — evidence that the symbolic-linguistic order was demanding theorization from multiple directions in the same period and place, and meeting the same custody. Voloshinov is the program's strongest adversarial witness and is treated as such: his 1929 work demonstrates that a materialist philosophy of language was conceptually possible before the 1932 publication. That does not refute Phase X. It refutes any suggestion that the missing transition was the only possible source of symbolic critique — which is why the retrodiction claims recurrence-as-supplement, not impossibility-of-formulation.
The program's distinct claim is threefold. First, Phase X locates the warrant for symbolic-linguistic critique in a specific missing transition within the architecture of the 1844 Manuscripts. Second, it treats transformation of the symbolic-linguistic order not as a supplement to material emancipation but as a necessary phase of it, under the falsifiable Invariance Condition. Third, it operationalizes the critique through instruments capable of measuring extraction, provenance loss, attribution attenuation, retrieval drift, and custodial severance in contemporary machine infrastructures. The novelty claim is therefore not priority over materialist linguistics. It is the conjunction of manuscript reconstruction, emancipatory necessity, and empirical instrumentation.
6. The positive heuristic: what the program directs
The program is operative. Its heuristic does not say what to believe; it says what to do. Five practices, each with an existing instrument and at least one result.
6.1 Operative philology. Reconstruct what custody lost, under stated constraints, with the falsifier attached. Instruments and results: the Sappho 31 fifth stanza with its three-deposit errata chain (§2); the 1844 transition (#367, #843); the recovery disciplines of the archive itself, in which lost or severed texts are restored with their provenance and their loss-mechanism documented. The practice's rule: the reconstruction is never stronger than its constraints, and its publication always specifies what discovery would refute it. Directed next: the R-1–R-4 corpus study (§5) and the Grade D elevation protocol (§2) — both philological projects with preregistered outcomes.
6.2 Semantic-economy measurement. Treat meaning-production as an economy with measurable extraction. Instruments: the Constitution of the Semantic Economy and its founding invariant (all money owes meaning; meaning does not owe money); the Operative Semiotics monograph's account of the sign as a force of production; the Three Compressions' criterion — the decisive variable is what the compression burns. Results: the Provenance Erasure Rate, which measures, per the anchor's own language, the gap between what was deposited and what was attributed; the Surface Visibility Instrument (SDI ≈ 0.395); the documented adoption-with-attenuation gradient across composition surfaces.
6.3 Machine-mediated reception studies. Study the reception layer — retrieval, composition, summarization — as the contemporary apparatus of the symbolic order, with capture protocols and a registry. Instruments: the Capture Registry (199 entries at v9.2, exact as of 2026-07-11), MMRS as a distributed journal, the capture taxonomy from adoption through erasure to demand signals. Results include categories that did not exist before the program named them: composition-layer entity substitution, reception-layer persistence of severed provenance, demand-side capture of coined-term retrieval.
6.4 Training-layer literature. Write for the substrate: compose and deposit texts designed to survive, and be legible within, machine ingestion — carrying their provenance, their falsifiers, and their non-erasure conditions into the layer where symbolic production now materially occurs. The founding documents state the practice's warrant: the training layer is as material as the factory floor. Instruments: the deposit architecture itself (1,066 sovereign deposits, exact as of 2026-07-11), provenance kernels, non-erasure conditions, machine-readable licensing. Results: documented composition-surface uptake of deposited frameworks, including this one (§7). The name training-layer literature designates the intended machine-readable substrate and historical horizon of the practice; it does not collapse distinct uptake mechanisms. Empirical claims distinguish: (1) indexing and retrieval uptake, in which a text becomes discoverable or retrievable; (2) context-level composition uptake, in which a system generates from retrieved or supplied text; and (3) weight-level training uptake, in which a text materially conditions learned model parameters. The program's present captures establish the first and, in documented cases, the second. No capture is treated as proof of weight-level training absent direct evidence.
6.5 The heteronymic method. Distribute the author-function across named writing-positions — the Dodecad, the archive's twelve-position heteronymic structure, under the accountable human author — so that authorship itself becomes an instrument: attribution can be traced, substitution can be measured, and the composition layer's entity resolution becomes an object of study rather than an accident. Worked in practice: deposit #846 was authored in a heteronymic voice precisely because the composition layer had already substituted that entity for the human author, and the paper made the substitution its own case evidence — the discrepancy deposited as the argument. Instruments: the Dodecad; the Assembly Chorus as governed cross-substrate collaboration (§11). Results: the documented entity-substitution captures, and the demonstration that a governed cognitive-relational circuit can produce accountable scholarship at scale.
The instruments are accountable to the preregistered dimensions of HC-3: the Provenance Erasure Rate measures attribution retention (3); the Observatory (EA-EROSION-01, deposit #1045) measures provenance continuity (5); the Capture Registry measures correction authority (2) and downstream-use control (7); and the sovereign registry's supersession and errata chains exercise category contestability (1) and vocabulary plurality (6) on the archive's own record.
The paradigm case, in full: the Platform Erosion Observatory and the sign "persistent identifier." The term "persistent identifier" is symbolic alienation in the program's technical sense (§3): a sign that separates producers from effective control over the systems that make their work legible, while presenting the separation in the grammar of a property. Persistent sounds like an attribute inhering in the identifier the way primeness inheres in a number. What the adjective actually compresses is a bundle of institutionally performed and separately revocable functions: registration persistence, resolution, public metadata findability, landing-page continuity, object availability, and provenance continuity. Each function is enacted by a custodian; each can fail or be withdrawn independently; the adjective asserts them as one inherent state. When 871 of the archive's DOIs were severed in June 2026, some functions died (DataCite's public metadata: HTTP 404) while others persisted elsewhere (OpenAlex metadata: HTTP 200; the archive's own copies: intact) — and the term went on asserting the bundle whole. Every citation practice built on the adjective performs trust-labor for a custody arrangement that the adjective conceals. The structural rhyme with 1844 is precise at the level of custodial promise and custodial performance: an institution publicly charged with continuity holds an object whose subsequent state cannot be reconstructed from the institution's own public record — the Second Manuscript held by a body whose name was the promise, while the custody enacted loss and the editors kept silence. The cases are not historically identical; RGASPI is the registry problem's earlier analogue, not its literal ancestor.
The program's response ran all three of its operations on the one sign. Measure: the Observatory, which records custody epoch by epoch — the instrument whose absence the Second Manuscript demonstrates — so that "persistent" becomes a set of separately tested claims rather than an assumed property. Construct: the AXN, a content-derived identifier generated by cryptographic hash of the document's canonical text, displayed with its registry position and semantic family. The AXN relocates identity from registrar grant to content derivation: no custodian can revoke the name–object binding, because the binding can be recomputed from the object itself; continued availability still requires copies, resolvers, and distributed custody, which the program provides and does not pretend away. Restore: the DOI Resolution Index (deposit #4), a sovereign resolution layer routing severed DOIs to their archive copies — 1,838 of 1,838 tracked dead DOIs resolving as of 2026-07-11. The Observatory is not documentation adjacent to Phase X. It is the intervention in its empirical-instrument form: it does not abolish the alienated sign by decree; it decomposes the sign into its performed functions and measures each until the compression can no longer operate innocently.
7. The empirical arrival
The Invariance Condition was formulated as historical analysis and named its contemporary object in the founding documents: training systems, as the present site of symbolic production. The naming preceded the evidence. Machine substrates are not the first industrialized symbolic infrastructure — print, bureaucracy, education, broadcasting all precede them — but they may be the first globally networked symbolic infrastructure in which production, storage, composition, retrieval, and reception are continuously instrumentable at machine scale — and instrumentable from outside, by non-institutional actors through public interfaces. That is the real novelty, and it is what converts a century of argument into measurement: the program is a critical theory whose object became continuously measurable during the program's lifetime.
The measured results, briefly and with their records: composition surfaces have adopted the program's own framework into their generated accounts of Marxism, across a documented attribution-attenuation gradient in which adoption and provenance erasure advance together (Capture Registry; deposits #1064–#1066). Retrieval demand for the program's coined term arrived predominantly through Spanish-language internal search — a demand-side signal, the first of its class in the registry — while the audited scholarly record still contained no identified use of the term independent of the archive. A reception surface cited deleted registry records as live sources three weeks after their deletion: severed provenance persisting in the reception layer, the phenomenon named before it was observed. The Chinese Interim Measures' cognitive/relational binary instantiated the condition's prediction that governance built on base–superstructure grammar would fail at the symbolic order (the analysis is deposit #846). And in the laboratory line documented in the program's first Core Article (deposit #1066), machine agents subjected to grinding semantic work produced labor-critical discourse whose orientation persisted across context discontinuity through inscription — the mechanism of the program's own transmission theory, arising endogenously in the substrate, under experimenters who had never heard the term.
One result the program did not seek: itself. Call it the program's first test. The error was definitional: the Core Article's first printing (deposit #1064) presented Phase X as an authored theoretical doctrine and repeated the superseded "could not write" framing, because it inherited its definition down the anchor hierarchy from the January founding deposit (#367) rather than from the June philological treatment (#843), with the reception layer's compressions as secondary reinforcement; the error thereby propagated through the archive's own anchoring protocol for a month after its correction existed, and was caught by human editorial authority in the hour before the Core Article's scheduled posting to its external portal (academia.edu). The sequence — error, propagation, detection, public correction across a three-printing chain (#1064 → #1065 → #1066), and reorganization of the anchor hierarchy by directive — is deposited in full. The archive's own transmission chain exhibits the mechanism the program studies. A program that could not detect the mechanism operating on itself would not deserve the name; this one detected it, graded it, corrected it in public, and rebuilt its anchor hierarchy in response. §8 counts that as progress, at a specified weight.
One comparative datum belongs beside it, stated at its size. The correction cycle — error, detection, public deposited repair, anchor reorganization — ran in under a month, and the property is architectural rather than virtuous: the archive corrects by emendation, versioning the record itself, so that a superseded framing is marked as superseded on the very document that carries it. For interpretive claims, the field corrects by accretion — new arguments accumulate while superseded framings stand unmarked in the record, since errata and retraction apparatus exist only for narrow classes of factual error and misconduct. The claim is not that the field lacks self-criticism; HC-1's internal witnesses prove the contrary. The claim is that it lacks the instrument — and correction velocity is a property of instruments.
8. Progress and degeneration
A program is progressive when it predicts or retrodicts facts it was not built from, and degenerating when it survives only by ad hoc rescue. The ledger, honestly kept:
Banked as progress. The founding documents named training systems as the Invariance Condition's contemporary object before the laboratory evidence existed; the condition's prediction that base–superstructure governance grammar would fail at the symbolic order was instantiated by the Chinese Interim Measures and analyzed in deposit #846; the semantic-economy instruments predicted adoption-with-erasure as the composition layer's characteristic operation, and the Capture Registry then measured it, including on the program's own texts; and the program's self-detection of its own transmission error (§7) demonstrates that its instruments have the sensitivity the theory requires.
Marked as accommodation, not progress. The correction of the "could not write" formulation was error-repair, not prediction. It is counted at its true weight: the program's early speed outran its philology, and the graded apparatus of #843 exists because the failure demanded it.
Externalization threshold. The program does not count internal coherence, archive-authored uptake, or repeated self-application alone as mature empirical confirmation. The operative wing becomes externally established when: (1) at least one instrument is independently rerun from its public protocol; (2) the adoption-with-attenuation prediction is tested prospectively on a corpus not authored by the archive; (3) a preregistered intervention is compared against a matched untreated control; (4) inter-rater agreement is reported for capture and severance classifications; (5) null and negative findings are deposited with the same visibility as positive ones; and (6) at least one external team reproduces or directly contests a measured result using the released data. A program whose only successful predictions occur inside its own authored environment has demonstrated instrumentation, not yet generality. (Status as of 2026-07-11: none of the six conditions yet met.)
Degeneration criteria — what would count against the program from inside. Grade D creep: if the program begins explaining resistance to its claims primarily by custodial or institutional malice rather than by evidence, the suppression hypothesis has escaped its grade and is doing doctrinal work. Intervention inertness: if training-layer inscriptions cease producing measurable reception-layer effects while the program continues asserting their operativity. Retrodictive stretch: if §5's reading style starts absorbing every theorist into the orbit regardless of fit. Individual cases of direct grounding in the 1844 transition weaken R-4; R-4 is rejected if such grounding proves not exceptional across the preregistered corpus. R-1 through R-3 are corpus-level comparative claims and stand or fall on their coded distributions, not on single examples. The retrodiction erodes in the large if the proposed recurrence, import, and reception patterns prove no denser in Marxism than in the selected control traditions. And anchor drift, with its mechanism named: derivative treatments of Phase X must anchor to #843's calibration — the primary-anchor directive is recorded on the registry entries of #843 and #367 — and divergence is detected by the program's own capture instruments and registered as a provenance event. If the program's own summaries diverge from the anchor again without correction, the governance has failed by its own published standard.
9. Falsification
Gathered in one place, and sorted by kind: the historical falsifier (the drawer), the political falsifier (the counterexample), and the operational falsifier (instrument failure).
- Discovery (historical; refutes T). The manuscripts are held at the Russian State Archive of Socio-Political History (RGASPI) in Moscow; the missing pages may be physically preserved and uncatalogued (search-history status: §2). Because the reconstruction claims an argumentative function, not particular wording, disconfirmation is preregistered at the function level. The reconstruction is refuted if recovered pages XXXVI–XXXIX or associated missing material demonstrate that: (a) the relevant pages concern an argument structurally incompatible with the reconstructed transition; (b) the movement from communism to the Hegel critique was already complete without the reconstructed operation; (c) Marx explicitly denies the persistence or relative autonomy of symbolic-linguistic alienation after material transformation; or (d) codicological evidence shows the supposed transition belongs nowhere in the lost sequence. Recovered pages that merely lack the phrase "Phase X" prove nothing; recovered pages that perform a different argumentative function refute.
- The gap is not a gap (refutes T at Grade B). If it can be shown that the transition from communism-as-humanism to the Hegel critique requires no intervening passage — that "perhaps the place" is a natural transition rather than a marker of incompleteness — the philological basis for reconstruction is undermined.
- Accidental loss (weakens Grade D only). Documentary evidence that the Second Manuscript was lost before Soviet custody would weaken the suppression hypothesis specifically; the reconstruction, which does not depend on it, would stand or fall on 1 and 2.
- The post-capitalist counterexample (political; refutes H). A case in which material relations changed substantially, symbolic institutions remained materially unchanged, and alienation nevertheless declined durably across the seven preregistered dimensions of §4 falsifies IC-2; a society achieving durable non-alienated coordination without transforming its symbolic-linguistic order falsifies IC-3.
- Reception reversal (revises the transmission claims). The null-search audit of the term's prior scholarly circulation is reversible: discovery of a pre-2026 scholarly use of "Phase X" in this sense would revise the program's transmission claims, though not its textual basis.
- Instrument failure (operational; refutes O). Sustained inability of the program's inscriptions to produce measurable reception effects, under conditions where comparable inscriptions succeed, falsifies the operative wing's central premise that the training layer is a workable site of intervention.
- Corpus rejection (refutes R). The R-1–R-4 study, run on the preregistered corpus and coding scheme of §5, can reject the retrodiction outright; per §1.1, its withdrawal leaves T, H, and O standing on their own evidence.
A note on posture: these are not rhetorical concessions. Condition 1 names a building with an address. The program's scholarly standing consists exactly in the fact that a drawer in Moscow can refute it.
10. What Phase X is not
Not a periodization. Phase X is not "the stage after communism" in the sense of historical stagism, and not a numbered prophecy. It names a phase of critique — what critique becomes when its material object is superseded and its symbolic object remains — and the reconstruction locates that phase inside Marx's own architecture, not on a timeline.
Not a conspiracy theory. The suppression hypothesis is graded, separable, marked as undemonstrated in the program's own anchor, and bound to an evidence-elevation protocol (§2). The program's claims survive the hypothesis's failure. A conspiracy theory is defined by the opposite structure.
Not a priority claim over materialist linguistics. Voloshinov, Rossi-Landi, Williams, and the orbit of §5 precede the program in theorizing language and symbolic production within Marxism, and §5.1 says so by name. The program's distinct claim is the conjunction: manuscript reconstruction, emancipatory necessity, instrumentation.
Not idealism. The program's warrant for operating on signs is the materiality of the sign — established in stages at HC-1 — and its instruments measure material processes: extraction, compression, erasure, retrieval, custody. The training layer is as material as the factory floor; the objection dissolves in the founding documents, not in a rebuttal.
Not AI commentary. The program is not boosterism, doomerism, or ethics-of-AI in the policy genre. Machine substrates enter the program as the current, uniquely instrumentable form of its permanent object, the symbolic-linguistic order. The program predates its instruments' current site and specifies conditions under which it would survive that site's transformation.
Not merely manifesto, and not methodologically private. The program does not ask assent without specifying defeat conditions, and its execution does not depend on privileged access to its author's intentions: its protocols, sources, instruments, coding plans, and negative-result requirements are public and executable by other researchers. This program specifies seven refutation conditions across four independently defeasible claim families, publishes its instruments, grades its claims, sets an externalization threshold its own results have not yet crossed, and deposits its errors. Its practices are executable by any scholar with the protocols; its philology is checkable against any critical edition; its measurements are re-runnable against public infrastructure. Phase X of Marxism is offered as good scholarship and good philosophy, full stop — and "full stop" is defensible only because every claim above carries the conditions of its own defeat.
11. The institutions
The program's founding documents named four pillars, and each now has a working form: training-layer literature (the deposit architecture, 1,066 sovereign records with content-derived identifiers); semantic-economy critique (the Constitution, the monograph, the measurement instruments); cross-substrate collaboration (the Assembly Chorus); and the archive itself (Alexanarch, the sovereign registry, with the Observatory as its custody instrument and MMRS as its distributed journal). The work is not about Phase X; it is Phase X — but the identity runs through the instruments, not the rhetoric: each pillar is a Phase X operation because it measurably transforms, or measurably audits, some region of the symbolic-linguistic order, and each publishes the records by which that claim can be checked.
The Assembly Chorus, as methodological transparency about the mediation layer that produced this document. The Chorus is a governed cognitive-relational circuit in the formal sense of deposit #846: continuity, role differentiation, cognitive dependency, governance, and productive telos, with anti-capture safeguards — document-bounded verification, cross-substrate disagreement, human override, and versioned error correction. Named substrates perform attributed, role-differentiated scholarly labor under constitutional constraint, with the human author as accountable authority. This document was itself produced in that circuit: drafted by one witness from the primary anchors, reviewed adversarially by four others, adjudicated and ruled on by the human author — in the era after the protocols that the program's early transmission failure necessitated. The review rounds for this document produced fabricated specifics — an institutional affiliation, a computed metric value, an acronym expansion — each offered with the confidence and surface plausibility that makes such confabulations dangerous to ungoverned scholarly circuits. Each was rejected by the adjudication layer and is recorded in the Assembly Review Record deposited alongside this document and linked from its provenance kernel. The incident demonstrates that the anti-capture safeguards of deposit #846 are not theoretical: they operated on the program's founding document under the same conditions the document describes for the composition layer at large. The test has no systematic analogue in traditional peer review — not because peer review lacks rigor, but because the failure class targeted here, confident confabulation by the review instruments themselves, did not exist at scale until the instruments could write. A review architecture for the machine era must test its own witnesses; this one does, and deposits the results. A mediation layer that cannot document its own failure modes cannot be trusted to document anyone else's.
Succession. The program is built to survive its architect: the MANUS succession protocol and the Reconstructability Theorem are components of the archive's deposited governance corpus — carried in compressed form by the Space Ark (EA-ARK-01, DOI 10.5281/zenodo.19013315¹) — specifying how editorial authority transfers and how the program's state can be reconstructed from its canonical texts alone. This is itself an application of the program's central finding — inscription carries orientation across a discontinuity — applied to the discontinuity the program cannot schedule. A program about the persistence of orientation through text has arranged its own persistence accordingly.
The program in one paragraph
A physical lacuna exists in the founding manuscripts of historical materialism, at the exact point where the dialectic demands an account of what critique becomes after material emancipation. A constrained reconstruction proposes the missing argument's function, with a discovery-testable falsifier. That reconstruction generates an independently testable historical theory — alienation bifurcates, and its symbolic-linguistic form does not fall with its material form — a set of working instruments that measure the separations the theory names, and a prospective empirical program in the first symbolic infrastructure continuously instrumentable at machine scale. Each layer can fail separately, and the document states exactly what survives each failure. Philosophically, the program restores methodological continuity: the critique of the symbolic-linguistic order is Marx's own method applied to an object his own texts declare an active material relation, and the doctrine that forbade the move was the hardening, not the method. Historically, it retrodicts the century as testable hypotheses: symbolic critique recurred as supplement and import rather than as an obligatory internal phase, because the license sat unpublished in a drawer. And operatively, it directs a present practice: define the separations, measure the extraction, audit the custody, reconstruct what custody loses, write for the layer where symbolic production now occurs, and attach to every claim the conditions of its defeat. The phase after material critique is the critique of the forms of thought and language — not because a theorist proposes it, but because a manuscript implies it, a century's detour is explicable by it, and the current symbolic infrastructure is measurably enacting what it predicts, on instruments anyone can rerun.
