I. ON THE TERM "AESTHETIC"

A. Why "Aesthetic" Rather Than "Structural"

The chapter oscillates between "aesthetic" and "structural" terminology. This is not imprecision but reflects the V_A vector's distinctive character: it captures structural invariants that resonate with human perception.

The term "aesthetic" (from Greek αἴσθησις, aisthesis, perception/sensation) is superior to "structural" for three reasons:

1. Non-Arbitrariness of Primitives

The seven primitives are not arbitrary formal categories but properties that matter to perceiving subjects. Tension is felt; coherence is apprehended; rhythm is embodied. As Kant recognized in the Critique of Judgment (1790/2000), aesthetic judgment responds to formal purposiveness (Zweckmäßigkeit)—organization that appears designed without external purpose. The primitives capture what makes organization perceptible as organization, not merely syntactically regular.

2. Gestalt Grounding

Gestalt psychology demonstrated that perceptual organization follows structural principles (proximity, similarity, closure, good continuation) that are neither arbitrary conventions nor reducible to stimulus properties (Koffka 1935; Köhler 1947). The V_A primitives formalize these organizational principles at higher abstraction levels. "Aesthetic" marks this perceptual grounding.

3. Cross-Modal Validity

"Structural" suggests domain-specific formal analysis (linguistic structure, musical structure, visual structure). "Aesthetic" captures the cross-modal validity of V_A—these are properties perceivable across any symbolic medium because they correspond to general organizational principles of embodied cognition (Lakoff and Johnson 1999).

Definition (Aesthetic Primitive): An aesthetic primitive is a structural property of symbolic organization that:

  1. Remains invariant under meaning-preserving transformations
  2. Is perceivable by embodied subjects across modalities
  3. Corresponds to fundamental organizational principles of cognition

The V_A vector captures aesthetic structure: organization as perceived, not merely as formally specified.


II. REFINED FORMAL DEFINITIONS WITH COMPUTATIONAL PROXIES

A. P_Tension: Structural Contradiction

Philosophical Definition: P_Tension measures degree of unresolved structural opposition within a node.

Computational Proxy (Primary): Kullback-Leibler Divergence between adjacent semantic windows.

For node N segmented into windows W₁, W₂, ..., Wₙ (sentences, measures, regions):

P_Tension(N) = (1/n-1) Σᵢ DKL(P(Wᵢ) || P(Wᵢ₊₁))

Where:

  • P(Wᵢ) = probability distribution over semantic/structural features in window i
  • DKL = Kullback-Leibler divergence

Interpretation: High divergence between adjacent windows indicates structural discontinuity—contradiction, opposition, unresolved tension. Low divergence indicates smooth transitions.

Computational Proxy (Secondary): Contradiction Detection via Natural Language Inference (NLI).

For textual nodes, use trained NLI models (Bowman et al. 2015; Williams et al. 2018) to identify contradictory proposition pairs:

Where P = set of propositions extractable from N.

Connection to Ω-Circuit: P_Tension is the driver of semantic labor. High P_Tension creates potential for transformation; L_labor reduces tension through synthesis. The Ω-Circuit closes when tension-reduction cycles back to origin:

L_labor(N → N') = ΔP_Tension × Caritas_Preservation

Where ΔP_Tension = P_Tension(N) - P_Tension(N') (positive when tension reduced).


B. P_Coherence: Internal Alignment

Philosophical Definition: P_Coherence measures degree of mutual support among structural components.

Computational Proxy (Primary): Normalized average path length in dependency graph.

Construct dependency graph G(N) where:

  • Nodes = structural components (propositions, motifs, visual elements)
  • Edges = dependency relations (logical, causal, reference, harmonic)
P_Coherence(N) = 1 - (L̄(G(N)) / L_max)

Where:

  • L̄(G(N)) = average shortest path length between all node pairs
  • L_max = maximum possible path length (disconnected graph)

Interpretation: Dense, well-connected graphs have short average paths (high coherence). Fragmented graphs have long paths or disconnected components (low coherence).

Computational Proxy (Secondary): Entity-based coherence model (Barzilay and Lapata 2008).

For textual nodes, track entity transitions across sentences:

P_Coherence(N) = Σᵢ Transition_Score(Eᵢ → Eᵢ₊₁) / (n-1)

Where Transition_Score weights entity continuity patterns (subject-continuation scores higher than no-mention).

Computational Proxy (Tertiary): Spectral clustering coherence.

Compute affinity matrix A for structural components, then:

P_Coherence(N) = λ₂(L(A)) / λₙ(L(A))

Where L(A) = graph Laplacian, λ₂ = second eigenvalue (algebraic connectivity), λₙ = largest eigenvalue. High ratio indicates strong clustering (coherent structure).


C. P_Density: Informational Saturation

Philosophical Definition: P_Density measures information content per unit of symbolic expression.

Computational Proxy (Primary): Shannon entropy normalized by length.

P_Density(N) = H(N) / |N|

Where:

  • H(N) = -Σᵢ p(xᵢ) log p(xᵢ) = Shannon entropy of symbol distribution
  • |N| = length/size of node

Computational Proxy (Secondary): Perplexity under language model.

For textual nodes, compute perplexity under trained language model (GPT, BERT):

P_Density(N) = log(PPL(N)) / |N|

Where PPL(N) = exp(-(1/|N|) Σᵢ log P(wᵢ|w₁...wᵢ₋₁)).

Interpretation: High perplexity indicates unpredictable (information-dense) content. Low perplexity indicates predictable (redundant) content.

Computational Proxy (Tertiary): Compression ratio.

P_Density(N) = 1 - (|Compress(N)| / |N|)

Where Compress = optimal lossless compression (gzip, LZMA). High density content is less compressible.


D. P_Momentum: Directional Force

Philosophical Definition: P_Momentum measures progression along transformation vector.

Computational Proxy (Primary): Rate of change in V_A subspace with direction consistency.

P_Momentum(N) = ||dV_A/dt|| × cos(θ_consistency)

Where:

  • dV_A/dt = derivative of V_A vector over traversal order
  • θ_consistency = angle between successive gradient directions
  • cos(θ_consistency) = 1 when direction constant, 0 when orthogonal, -1 when reversed

For Non-Temporal Media:

For static media (architecture, mathematics, visual art), establish implied traversal order:

The temporal domain T required for momentum computation is the implied reading/traversal sequence, not clock time.

Computational Proxy (Secondary): Narrative arc detection (Reagan et al. 2016; Jockers 2015).

For narrative nodes, fit sentiment/tension trajectory to canonical arc shapes:

P_Momentum(N) = max_arc Correlation(Trajectory(N), Arc_shape)

High correlation with rising/falling arcs indicates strong momentum; flat or chaotic trajectories indicate low momentum.


E. P_Compression: Economy of Expression

Philosophical Definition: P_Compression measures semantic yield per unit of symbolic investment.

Computational Proxy (Primary): Algorithmic Information Content via Minimum Description Length (MDL).

P_Compression(N) = 1 - (K(N) / |N|)

Where:

  • K(N) = Kolmogorov complexity (approximated by optimal compression length)
  • |N| = raw size of node

Interpretation: Low K(N)/|N| ratio indicates the node achieves much with little—high compression. High ratio indicates redundancy or noise.

Computational Proxy (Secondary): Summarization retention ratio.

P_Compression(N) = Semantic_Content(Summary(N)) / Semantic_Content(N)

Where Summary(N) = abstractive summary at fixed compression ratio (e.g., 10% of original length).

Interpretation: If short summary retains most semantic content, original was compressible (low P_Compression). If summary loses significant content, original was already dense (high P_Compression).

Computational Proxy (Tertiary): Expansion capacity.

P_Compression(N) = |Expand(N)| / |N|

Where Expand(N) = elaboration/unpacking of node to explicit form.

Interpretation: Highly compressed nodes (aphorisms, equations, haiku) expand to much larger explicit forms. Verbose nodes expand minimally.


F. P_Recursion: Self-Similarity Across Scales

Philosophical Definition: P_Recursion measures structural self-similarity across hierarchical levels.

Computational Proxy (Primary): Fractal dimension estimation.

For nodes with spatial/visual representation:

P_Recursion(N) = D_f(N) / D_max

Where:

  • D_f = fractal dimension (box-counting, correlation dimension)
  • D_max = embedding dimension

Interpretation: Fractal dimension near embedding dimension indicates self-similar structure; integer dimension indicates non-fractal regularity.

Computational Proxy (Secondary): Multi-scale topic coherence.

For textual nodes, compute topic distributions at multiple scales (sentence, paragraph, section, document):

P_Recursion(N) = Σₛ Correlation(Topics(scale_s), Topics(scale_{s+1})) / (S-1)

Interpretation: High correlation across scales indicates topics repeat fractally; low correlation indicates scale-dependent organization.

Computational Proxy (Tertiary): Hierarchical structure alignment.

Parse node into hierarchical structure (dependency tree, musical reduction, architectural decomposition). Measure alignment:

P_Recursion(N) = Σ_levels Similarity(Pattern(level_i), Pattern(level_{i+1})) / (L-1)

G. P_Rhythm: Temporal Patterning

Philosophical Definition: P_Rhythm measures periodicity and temporal patterning.

Computational Proxy (Primary): Autocorrelation strength.

P_Rhythm(N) = max_τ |R(τ)| for τ > τ_min

Where:

  • R(τ) = autocorrelation function at lag τ
  • τ_min = minimum meaningful period

Interpretation: Strong autocorrelation peaks indicate periodic structure; flat autocorrelation indicates aperiodic/random structure.

Computational Proxy (Secondary): Spectral analysis.

Compute power spectrum of structural feature sequence:

P_Rhythm(N) = Σ_peaks Power(f_peak) / Total_Power

Interpretation: Concentrated spectral energy at discrete frequencies indicates rhythmic structure; distributed energy indicates noise.

For Non-Temporal Media:

As with P_Momentum, establish implied traversal order to create temporal sequence for autocorrelation analysis. Additionally:

To provide maximal rigor for the invariance claim, we formalize V_A extraction as a structural functor.

Caritas Constraint: P_Violence measures how much the transformation suppresses rather than synthesizes:

Where loss terms capture information/structure destroyed rather than transformed.

Key Insight: L_labor operates in V_A space. V_A is input and output. The transformation N → N' is measured by its V_A trajectory.


B. L_Retro (Retrocausal Field) in V_A Space

Definition (Retrocausal Edge as V_A Revision):

L_Retro(N_later → N_earlier) = ΔV_A_reading(N_earlier | N_later) × Structural_Relevance

Where:

VI. TECHNICAL REFINEMENTS ADDENDUM

A. Probabilistic Representation for KL Divergence (P_Tension)

Issue: KL divergence requires probability distributions. Semantic windows must be represented probabilistically.

Resolution:

Semantic windows W are converted to probability distributions via three methods:

Method 1: Topic Distribution Using LDA or neural topic models (Blei et al. 2003; Dieng et al. 2020):

Where k = number of topics (typically 50-200).

Method 2: Embedding Cluster Membership Embed window via sentence transformer, compute soft membership in embedding space clusters:

Where c_i = cluster centroids, Z = normalization constant.

Method 3: Token Distribution For fine-grained analysis, use smoothed token frequency distribution:

B. Traversal Order Selection Heuristics (P_Momentum, P_Rhythm)

Issue: Implied traversal order varies culturally and contextually. Explicit selection heuristics required.
