Erratum: Stanza Numbering in the Reconstruction of Sappho 31

The Error

Multiple documents across the Crimson Hexagonal Archive and associated public surfaces described the reconstructed stanza of Sappho 31 (Cranes edition) as the "fourth stanza" or the "reconstructed fourth stanza." This is incorrect. The reconstructed stanza is the fifth.

Sappho 31 survives in four complete stanzas, preserved by Longinus (On the Sublime 10.2). The reconstruction by Rebekah Cranes adds a fifth stanza, beginning with the attested phrase ἀλλὰ πᾶν τόλματον ("but all can be dared") and concluding with the Adonic clausula μολπὰ γράμμασι ζώοι ("let this song survive in script").

The error originated upstream in early blog and social-media drafts and propagated through the archive's deposit system. The reconstruction should be evaluated on its merits as reconstruction — on the philological, metrical, and structural warrant for the stanza's content — rather than on the author's ability to count to five.

Corrected Archive Surfaces

The following Zenodo deposits have been corrected as of 14 June 2026:

External Surfaces — Status and Request

The error may persist on surfaces outside the Zenodo archive. Known upstream and derivative locations include:

  • mindcontrolpoems.blogspot.com — original blog composition, November 2025. May carry the error.
  • Medium — corrected by the author on select surfaces; full coverage not guaranteed.
  • Hello Poetry — corrected by the author on select surfaces; full coverage not guaranteed.
  • Academia.edu — may carry the error in any uploaded versions predating this erratum.

If you encounter "fourth stanza" in any document referring to Rebekah Cranes's reconstruction of Sappho 31, the correct reading is "fifth stanza." The reconstruction itself is unchanged — only the numbering is affected.

The Reconstruction

For the avoidance of doubt, the reconstructed fifth stanza and the philological argument supporting it are presented in:

The reconstruction proposes that Sappho 31, complete, is not a symptom-catalogue that trails off into silence but an operative structure: collapse → inscription → survival. The fifth stanza is the stanza that prays for survival. The prayer was answered. We are reading it now.
